A blowout is the most common complication in ear stretching, and also the most easily prevented. It happens when tissue is forced through the back of the piercing during the stretching process, creating a raised collar or ring of excess skin on the back of the lobe. It looks alarming but if caught early is very often reversible.
A blowout occurs when ear tissue is pushed through the back of the piercing during stretching, creating a collar of excess skin on the back of the lobe. It is caused by stretching too fast, forcing a size the tissue was not ready for, or using a double-flare plug in a fresh stretch. Treatment: downsize immediately, allow 4-6 weeks of recovery, and massage the lobe daily with oil.
What a Blowout Looks Like
On the back of the lobe, a raised ring or collar of skin protrudes around the back of the jewellery. The tissue looks pushed outward like the lobe has been turned inside out at the back. It may be red, tender, and swollen in the first day or two. In mild cases it is barely noticeable; in severe cases it is a significant raised ring.
What Causes a Blowout?
• Stretching too fast: the most common cause. Going up two sizes in one step, or not waiting long enough between stretches.
• Forcing the stretch: pushing the taper through despite significant resistance or pain.
• Skipping sizes: attempting to go from 8G to 4G, for example, without the intermediate steps.
• Using a double-flare plug in a fresh stretch: the back flare forces tissue backward as it passes through.
• Cold tissue: stretching without warming the lobe first reduces elasticity.
Blowout Recovery: Step by Step
Step 1: Downsize Immediately
As soon as you identify a blowout, go down 1-2 sizes and wear a single-flare plug at the smaller size. This removes pressure from the damaged tissue and gives it space to recover. Do not continue wearing the size that caused the blowout.
Step 2: Clean and Soothe
Clean with sterile saline spray twice daily. The tissue around a blowout is irritated and may produce discharge. Saline keeps it clean without further irritation.
Step 3: Daily Oil Massage
Massage the blowout tissue gently with jojoba or vitamin E oil for 5-10 minutes daily. The massage encourages blood flow to the area and helps the tissue soften and retract. This is the most effective treatment for mild to moderate blowouts.
Step 4: Wait 4-6 Weeks
Give the tissue adequate time to recover before attempting to stretch again. The blowout collar should reduce significantly within 4-6 weeks of consistent downsizing and daily massage.
Step 5: When to See a Professional
If the blowout does not respond to downsizing and massage after 6-8 weeks, or if it is significant in size, consult a professional piercer. In severe cases where the tissue does not recover, a surgical correction (loboplasty) may eventually be considered but this is a last resort.
Preventing Blowouts
• Never skip sizes always move up one gauge at a time
• Wait the full recommended time between stretches (minimum 4-8 weeks at small sizes, more at larger)
• Always warm the tissue before stretching (warm shower or compress)
• Always lubricate before using a taper
• Stop immediately if you feel sharp pain it means the tissue is not ready
• Never use a double-flare plug for a fresh stretch
• Massage lobes with oil daily throughout the stretching process
Can a Blowout Be Permanent?
Mild to moderate blowouts caught early within the first few days -- almost always respond well to downsizing and massage. The tissue retracts significantly within 4-6 weeks.
Severe blowouts, or blowouts that are left untreated at the damaged size for weeks, can produce more permanent scar tissue that does not fully retract. In these cases, the lobe may retain a raised rim even after recovery. This does not prevent continued stretching but the scar tissue is less elastic than healthy tissue.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a blowout look like?
A raised ring or collar of excess skin on the back of the earlobe, around the back of the jewellery. The tissue looks pushed outward. It may be red and tender initially.
How do you fix a blowout?
Downsize immediately by 1-2 gauge sizes, wear a single-flare plug, clean with saline twice daily, and massage the blowout tissue with oil for 5-10 minutes daily. Most mild blowouts recover within 4-6 weeks.
Can you stretch through a blowout?
No. Never stretch through a blowout this enlarges the damage. Always downsize and allow full recovery before attempting to stretch again.
How long does blowout recovery take?
Mild blowouts typically reduce significantly within 4-6 weeks of consistent downsizing and daily oil massage. Severe blowouts may take 2-3 months or leave permanent scar tissue.
Does a blowout mean I should stop stretching?
Not necessarily. After full recovery, you can resume stretching more slowly and carefully. The blowout is a signal that you stretched too fast not that you cannot stretch at all.
