Clothing matters more than people expect
Most pre-piercing advice focuses on mental preparation, eating, and choosing the studio. Clothing tends to be an afterthought. But the right outfit for a piercing appointment genuinely affects how the procedure goes and how comfortable you are immediately afterwards. The wrong outfit can mean undressing in the studio (uncomfortable), pulling clothing over a fresh piercing (painful and risky), or wearing something that puts pressure on the new piercing on the way home.
This guide covers what to wear for piercing appointments by piercing position, what to avoid generally, and the small adjustments that make a meaningful difference. The advice is practical rather than aesthetic, the goal is making the appointment and the journey home as smooth as possible.
General principles
Five principles apply across all piercing positions.
• Comfortable, you may be in the studio for 30 to 90 minutes including waiting time
• Easy access to the piercing position without needing to undress significantly
• Nothing that needs to be pulled over the new piercing on the way home
• Loose enough that nothing presses on the new piercing for at least the first few hours
• Clean, this is a hygiene consideration that matters for the piercing
Ear piercings
Ear piercings (lobe, helix, tragus, conch, daith, rook, snug, forward helix, industrial) have specific clothing considerations.
Hair
• Tie your hair back if it is long enough. The piercer needs clear access to your ear
• Bring a hair tie if you do not arrive with hair already tied back. The studio may have spare ties but bringing your own is more reliable
• Avoid hairstyles that require the hair to be down (curls you want to maintain, a styled blow-dry). The piercer will need to move your hair around
• Wash your hair the day before or that morning if possible. Clean hair near a healing piercing is preferable
Top
• Wide neckline (scoop, v-neck, off-shoulder, or t-shirt) for easy access to the ear and to allow the piercer to work freely
• Avoid turtlenecks, polo necks, or anything that needs to come off over the head after the piercing. A button-up shirt or zip-up cardigan can be unfastened to remove without going over the head
• If you have multiple piercings planned (e.g. helix and forward helix in the same appointment), the same considerations apply
Headphones and glasses
• If you wear glasses, your piercer will likely ask you to remove them during the procedure. The arms of glasses can interfere with helix and tragus piercings during healing too. Plan for this
• If you wear hearing aids, discuss with your piercer in advance about positioning
• After the piercing, headphones (over-ear) will press on most cartilage piercings during healing. Use earbuds or open-back over-ear designs during the healing period
Nose piercings
Nose piercings (nostril, septum, high nostril, bridge) have minimal clothing requirements.
• No specific clothing needed for the piercing itself
• Avoid wearing nose-related items immediately before (nasal spray, nose strips) so the area is clean
• Tie hair back if it falls across your face. The piercer needs unobstructed view
• Wear glasses normally if you wear them, but they will need to come off during the procedure
• Avoid heavy makeup on the nose. Cleanser will be applied to the area before piercing
Lip and oral piercings
Lip piercings (labret, monroe, medusa, snake bites, vertical labret, smiley) and tongue piercings have specific considerations.
• Skip lipstick or lip balm before the appointment, the piercer needs the lip clean
• Brush your teeth and use mouthwash before leaving for the appointment for oral hygiene. The studio may also offer mouthwash
• Avoid eating immediately before (smelly foods like garlic, foods that get stuck in teeth) so the area is clean
• For tongue piercings specifically, brush thoroughly including the tongue
• Wear a top that does not require pulling over the face after the procedure
• Bring water for after, particularly for tongue piercings, you will want to rinse
Body piercings
Nipple, navel, and other body piercings need more specific clothing planning.
Nipple piercings
• Wear a loose top, no underwire bra. The piercer needs full access to the area
• Most studios provide gowns for nipple piercing procedures
• For the journey home, wear a loose top with no bra or with a soft non-underwire bralette
• Avoid lace or textured fabrics that could catch on the new piercing
• Wash with mild soap that morning, the area should be clean
Navel piercings
• Wear a top that lifts easily to expose the navel. T-shirt, blouse, or button-up. Avoid bodysuits or one-piece outfits
• Loose trousers or skirt, not low-rise jeans that will press on the new piercing
• After the procedure, the piercing will be raw for several hours. Tight waistbands rubbing against it is uncomfortable
• Consider bringing a soft loose dress or larger pair of trousers to change into if your usual clothing is fitted
Dermal and surface piercings
• Wear clothing that exposes the piercing area for the procedure
• Plan for the journey home, the piercing will be fresh and sensitive
• Avoid clothing that will rub directly on the piercing site for at least the first 24 hours
Genital piercings
Genital piercings have specific clothing requirements
Loose, comfortable underwear and trousers or skirt are essential. Avoid tight underwear, jeans, or anything that puts pressure on the area. Cotton underwear is preferable to synthetic fabrics during the journey home. Most reputable piercers performing genital piercings will discuss clothing considerations in advance as part of the consultation. Follow their specific recommendations for your particular piercing. If they have not discussed clothing with you, ask before the appointment.
Other practical considerations
Layers
Studios can be either warm (if they have heating on) or cool (if they are in basements or rear rooms). Wear layers so you can adjust. A loose cardigan or jacket that can be removed easily is useful.
Footwear
• Comfortable shoes, you may be in the studio for a while including waiting time
• Avoid heels for any procedure where you might feel faint afterwards
• Flat shoes give better stability if you need to stand up immediately after the procedure
Jewellery and accessories
• Leave valuable jewellery at home if you can. Studios are generally trustworthy but jewellery can be misplaced
• Remove necklaces or jewellery near the piercing area before you arrive
• Bring something easy to put on for after, particularly for nipple piercings (a loose bralette)
Bag
• Cross-body or shoulder bag, not a backpack that will press on the new piercing if it is on your back, shoulder, or chest
• Bring water, a snack, and any forms or ID you may need
• If your piercing is in a position the bag strap will touch (collarbone area for surface piercings, anywhere on the chest for some upper body piercings), consider carrying a tote bag instead
What to avoid
• Anything that needs to be pulled over the new piercing on the way home
• Anything that puts pressure on the new piercing
• Anything restrictive that you cannot adjust during the appointment
• Anything with hooks, clasps, or hardware that could catch on a fresh piercing
• Heavily fragrance-applied clothing if you might feel nauseous, strong scents amplify nausea
• Anything you would mind getting a small drop of blood on (rare but possible)
Shop the look
• Implant-grade titanium pieces

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I wear to my piercing appointment?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the piercing position without needing to undress significantly. For ear piercings, hair tied back and a top with a wide neckline. For nose and lip piercings, no specific requirements but no makeup on the area. For nipple piercings, a loose top with no underwire bra. For navel piercings, a top that lifts easily and loose trousers. The key principles are comfort, access, and nothing that will press on or need to be pulled over the new piercing afterwards.
Should I wear makeup to my piercing appointment?
Avoid makeup on the area being pierced. For nose piercings, no foundation, powder, or makeup on the nose. For lip piercings, no lipstick or lip balm. For ear piercings, makeup on the rest of the face is fine but no products in the hair near the ear area. The piercer needs the area clean for the procedure and any makeup residue can interfere with the antiseptic application before piercing.
Can I wear a bra to a nipple piercing appointment?
Yes for the journey there, but most studios will provide a gown and ask you to remove the bra for the procedure. For the journey home, plan to wear no bra or a soft non-underwire bralette. Underwire bras put pressure on the new piercing in ways that are uncomfortable and can affect healing in the first hours. Bring a soft loose top to wear over the bralette so you are comfortable on the way home.
What should I wear for a navel piercing?
A top that lifts easily to expose the navel (t-shirt, blouse, or button-up, not a bodysuit), and loose trousers or skirt that will not press on the new piercing. Avoid low-rise jeans and tight waistbands. The navel will be raw and sensitive for several hours after the procedure. Consider bringing a loose dress or larger trousers to change into if your usual clothing is fitted.
Should I tie my hair back for an ear piercing?
Yes. Long hair needs to be tied back so the piercer has clear access to your ear. Bring your own hair tie rather than relying on the studio to have one available. Avoid styles that need the hair to stay down (curls you want to maintain, a styled blow-dry), the piercer will need to move your hair around. Washing your hair the day before or that morning is preferable, clean hair near a healing piercing is better than dirty hair.
Should I avoid wearing perfume or cologne?
Light fragrance is fine, heavy fragrance is best avoided. Some clients experience nausea before or during piercing procedures, and strong scents amplify nausea. Heavy fragrance also lingers in small studio rooms and may bother both you and your piercer. If you usually wear strong fragrance, apply less than usual or skip on the day.
What about jewellery, should I take off my existing jewellery before the appointment?
Leave valuable jewellery at home if possible. Remove any jewellery near the piercing area (necklace for ear and lip piercings, earrings on the side being pierced if you have other piercings there). Other jewellery can stay on if it does not interfere with the procedure or the piercing position. The studio is generally trustworthy but small jewellery items can be misplaced if you remove them in unfamiliar surroundings.
