Gold piercings are timeless. The warm tone, the heritage feel, the way they catch light. But not all "gold" jewellery is created equal, and the wrong gold piece in a fresh piercing can sabotage healing for months.
Solid 14-karat or higher nickel-free yellow gold from a reputable source is one of only three materials approved by the Association of Professional Piercers for fresh piercings. Gold-plated jewellery is not safe for healing — the plating wears off and exposes nickel-containing base metal directly to the wound. PVD gold-coated titanium is a safer and more durable alternative.
Solid Gold vs Plated: The Critical Difference
Solid Gold
The entire piece is made from gold alloy throughout. A 14k piece is 58.3% pure gold mixed with other metals for hardness and colour. There is no surface coating to wear off.
Solid gold of 14k or higher (verified nickel-free) is APP-approved for fresh piercings.
Gold-Plated
A thin layer of real gold (often less than 0.5 microns) is electrochemically deposited onto a base metal — usually brass, copper alloy, or low-grade steel. Plating wears off in months under normal conditions; in a damp piercing channel it can wear within weeks.
Gold-plated jewellery is not safe for fresh piercings.
Vermeil
Sterling silver covered with at least 2.5 microns of gold of 10k or higher. Better than ordinary plating, but the silver core can still tarnish.
Gold-Filled
A thicker layer of gold mechanically bonded to a base metal core. Lasts longer than plating but eventually wears.
Karat Levels Explained
| Karat | Gold Content | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 24k | 99.9% | Pure gold. Too soft for piercings — bends easily. |
| 22k | 91.6% | Very soft. Used in cultural jewellery. |
| 18k | 75% | Strong, beautiful colour. Premium piercing choice. |
| 14k | 58.3% | APP minimum for fresh piercings. Excellent durability. |
| 10k | 41.7% | Below APP recommendation. |
| 9k | 37.5% | Common in UK; not recommended for piercings. |
The general rule: stay at 14k or higher for body jewellery, and verify that the alloy contains no nickel.
Yellow, White and Rose Gold
Yellow Gold
The classic warm gold tone. Made by alloying pure gold with copper and silver. Generally nickel-free.
White Gold
Pure gold mixed with white-coloured metals. Traditional white gold often contains nickel as a whitening agent. Modern "nickel-free" white gold uses palladium instead.
Rose Gold
Pure gold mixed with copper for a pink tone. Nickel-free in almost all cases.
PVD Gold Titanium: A Safer Alternative for Healing
If you love the look of gold but want a healing piercing to be as low-risk as possible, PVD gold-coated titanium is the smart choice. The base is implant-grade titanium ASTM F-136 — the safest material for fresh piercings — and the gold-toned coating is bonded at the molecular level.

How to Spot Real Gold
• Hallmark stamps — real gold is stamped with its karat ("14k", "585", "750" for 18k)
• Price — solid gold is genuinely expensive
• Weight — gold is dense; solid pieces feel heavier than they look
• Seller transparency — reputable sellers state karat and alloy composition
If a piece is sold as "gold" for under €20, it is plated. There are no exceptions.
Caring for Gold in a Fresh Piercing
• Saline rinses morning and evening
• Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs and natural water for 8+ weeks
• Sleep on a clean pillowcase; avoid pressure on the piercing
• Do not change the jewellery until your piercer says it is ready
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wear 9k gold in my piercing?
9k contains only 37.5% gold. The remaining 62.5% is alloy that may contain nickel and other reactive metals. Not recommended for fresh piercings; for healed lobes only.
Is gold-plated jewellery safe once a piercing is healed?
In a fully healed earlobe with no history of reactions, gold-plated jewellery is generally tolerated. Avoid in cartilage piercings or anywhere it is in prolonged contact with damp skin.
How can I tell if white gold contains nickel?
Ask the seller for the alloy specification. Modern fine jewellers offer nickel-free white gold or palladium white gold explicitly. If the seller cannot confirm, assume it contains nickel.
Is solid gold safe for nickel allergy?
Solid 14k+ gold from a verified nickel-free source is safe for almost all nickel-allergic individuals. The risk lies entirely in alloy composition — confirm before buying.
